Bangkok is a relatively safe place. Muggings and other forms of direct confrontation are uncommon. A bigger crime problem is pick-pocketing in crowds. Always be aware of your belongings in crowded areas.
The most likely criminal behavior you might encounter in Bangkok is retail scams, where touts may try to sell you something which is of far less value than what you paid for it.
Thailand is also known as the Land of Smiles. The warm smiles, hospitality and friendliness of the Thai people are a big reason why travellers keep coming back.
The official language of Bangkok is Thai and it is widely spoken throughout Thailand. English is also understood and spoken in the main city and tourist areas.
Bangkok’s culture is contemporary, yet still retains links to its tradition and Buddhist spirituality. Nearly 94% of Thails are Buddhist. It also has rich traditions in art forms such as music, art and dance.
Bangkok is one of the premier cities for world-class cuisine. In addition to thousands of outstanding Thai restaurants and street stalls, Bangkok features the entire spectrum of international cuisines, a by-product of its cosmopolitan population. It also has a diverse offering of drinking options, with some great bars and pubs.
The Thai baht is used in Bangkok. Major credit cards are accepted across Thailand in most major hotels and large restaurants but smaller businesses will expect to be paid in cash, as will taxi drivers. Tipping in hotels is not expected, but again is always appreciated, for instance 20 – 50 baht for the porter that carried your bags up to your room, or 20 baht left under your pillow for the cleaner. In all restaurants it is customary to leave behind any loose change in coins as a tip.
Bangkok uses 220 volts AC electrical supply. There is unfortunately no specific standard for plugs and outlets. The most common plug type is the two flat-pronged North American type but round prongs are also seen.
Many free Wifi spots are available around Bangkok.
Should you require assistance while in Bangkok, here are some useful numbers to take note of.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has officially abolished the Earthquake Incident Command Center, confirming the city’s return to normalcy. Furthermore, we have received confirmation that key locations, including QSNCC, partnered hotels, airports, public transportation, and major shopping malls, have undergone and cleared thorough structural inspections.
InfoComm Asia continues to be scheduled for 23-25 July 2025 at QSNCC in Bangkok. Any further updates will be immediately communicated.
